Undated typescript of George Underhill's diary which Underhill wrote for his grandchildren years after the events recorded. The journal records an 1849 voyage on the bark Palmetto from New York around Cape Horn to San Francisco. The almost daily entries describe the weather, shipboard life, meetings of the company, and stops in Rio de Janerio, Brazil, and Valparaíso, Chile. The author describes Rio de Janerio's buildings, gardens, markets and people. Underhill records freighting goods to the Makalene River and other gold mines, opening a store in Stockton, and buying goods in San Francisco. The account ends with a brief description of James and George Underhill's voyage home via Panama on the steamers Tennessee and Sierra Nevada.
